Typhoon Morakot Mudslides: Siao Lin Village Kaoshiung Photos / Update

Yesterday I went on an expedition to the typhoon Morakot ravaged area. The name of this place is Siao Lin village in the Kaohsiung suburb side of the city. The whole village population of 4 thousand was washed away by the mountain mud slide during typhoon Morakot on August 8, 2009. The area isnow restricted by the police and government for anyone to enter the ravaged site. I was lucky enough to know a Taxi driver that  used to live in the village, and through him got access to the area. The place used to be so green and was covered by lush forest and nature. Yesterday when I arrived in theSiao Lin Village the place was totally covered by rocks and dirt, and you can see all the houses in pieces in the mud. There are only a few houses left around the area, and they are barely there. When I was there, I saw the mountain crack in half, so now it looks like there are 2 mountains.  The place use to be green and really green, and now I’m standing on top of the rocks with broken road and bridges. They are still digging up bodies that are  buried under the mud, and they told me it will take more than 2 years to recover this place.

  1. I am a 78 year old female and this evening first learned of the Shaolin mudslides on our foreign language tv station. I am very saddened by the happening and will turn to this website to learn more of this tragedy.
