Hmmm… You are going to need to find someone local over there unless you are willing to pay shipping fees. I wouldn’t recommend that unless you get a great deal on something you really like. You can scour the classifieds on Englishintaiwan.com or tealit.com to search for a deal, or check out yahoo groups like the Tainan_bulletin . I wish I had more for you but thats it. When are you actually coming?

You are a very interesting case. I am assuming that you are married to a non Taiwanese. Government sites would be useful to you. I think most of the other sites are set up for working visa and what not. You could join Forumosa.com which is a forum and start some topics. You will likely find some people that have some answers for you there.

I am so glad to have found your site! I am seriously considering taking a teaching position in Taiwan. I will not be ready to commit until the fall of ‘08. I am taking this time to study the history,current events,culture (pop and classic), and language (Mandarin is kicking my ass)!
Last month the was Chinese Valentine’s Day. I know the Moon Festival is under way if not over by the time you read this. So what is the next big event?

You can join Yahoo and then join some Yahoo groups, like the Kaohsiung_bulletin and the Tainan_bulletin . Make a post about your friend and ask if anyone has seen or heard form them. Maybe join Forumosa or something like that as well.

Arizona.. Teachign English in Taiwan is great =) you make loads of cash (compared to most jobs anyway..) and it;s just a good lifestyle really. learning mandarin isn;’difficult with the enviroment.
My advice: Learn teh basics.. like hello, good bye, how much money? stuff liek that.. anything u think u could use day to day.. dont worry about connecting sentences and all that yet, it will come naturally once u have been there for a month or two..
I learnt as much as I could before I got there.. and turns out a lot of it wasnlt right, so I had to learn it again.

I have a friend who will be sailing a 16foot Hobie catamaran from Burma
to Taiwan to setup a longdistance world record
This is going to happen this year in March or so. Would it be possible to receive
some helpfull information about best places to land? It would also be great to get

Taoyuan isn’t the best place in Taiwan. I lived there for several years before and wouldn’t recommend that you spend much time there. Hopefully you will hang out with some people that have a car and can vacation with you around the island.

You live in Tainan? Alright! I lived there for two years (near Wu Fei Che & Shimen Lu). Best two years of my life. Met my wife and got married there. My family flew in from the USA to attend. The mayor of Tainan even showed up at the reception to wish us well (did you know he attended Rutgers Unv?)! I worked at 4 schools at one time and taught teachers at the Giraffe school main office. Too much running around so I managed to fill up a schedule at two schools. Money was good, prices affordable, always something to do and the food excellent! I miss mama Wu’s cooking a whole lot. My wife and I are in Florida now. She’s getting a degree here and we’re coming back when she’s finished. I dislike Florida already and can’t wait to come back. I miss my many Taiwanese and expat friends a whole lot. See you around Mild Seven.

That’s not a restaurant, its Wu mama, my mother-in-law! LOL, I guess I didn’t mention my wife is from Tainan. I like the laid back atmosphere too. I miss it and my laid back buddies. Instead of a rastaurant, how about if I plug my friend’s scooter repair shop?

IF your scooter breaks, take your scooter to my buddy Mr. Du. He’s on the corner of Guo Hua St. and Fu Wei St, it’s a few blocks from the big Mitsukoshi Dept. store. He knows little English but he has some buddies who speak well. He’s a good mechanic and very reasonable. Heck, IMHO, he charged too little!
