Rumor about Tainan Island

I was talking to a friend the other night and received a bit of interesting information regarding the creation of Tainan Island. Most people don’t know about this, but it is a fascinating development. In Anping, Tainan they have been doing extensive work on the beach, something I assumed was to beautify and make the area even more of a tourist center. Anping is well known for the Fort Zoolandia, Eternal Golden Castle, and several other must see spots and restaurants.

My friend was speaking to the project manager of a bridge they are building at the end of Jian Kang road (what is now the only access to the new Tainan island). They have also removed the old road going to this area and now it is some kind of canal. If the new area is successful they will create another bridge later to go where the old road once went. I realize this is dragging a bit and you are wondering why this is important.

You may or may not have heard about Taiwan looking at legalizing gambling on it’s offshore islands. Well, if everything works out with that then Tainan Island may end up being a legal gambling enclave. And I thought it was the government sinking money into the area to make it nicer for tourism.

I haven’t done any detective work about this yet, and this could be way off target, but if it isn’t it is a bad idea. Why? First, it will take away from the illegal gambling industry here in Tainan and in doing so, take money away from the local underground economy. Also, the police won’t be able to get as many kickbacks/bribes from these local gambling dens and they will suffer as well.

If anyone knows any more about this project please do share.
