Hualien Music News, October 15-31
Saturday October 18th saw Golden Melody-nominated Hakka singer and songwriter Lo Sirong playing Hualien’s “Old Alcohol Factory” Culture Park as part of the Hualien Nightlife Festival. Backed by a talented ensemble of musicians, guitarist A-Chan, and bluesmen David Chen and Conor Prunty, Lo put on a memorable one-hour show to a receptive audience under clear and starry skies. Hopes are high that this woman, who is completely charming both onstage and off, will grace Hualien with her presence again before too long.From the first few seconds to the final note, Lo’s CD, Everyday, reveals the range and depth of this woman’s extraordinary talent. This is music to soothe the soul; Everyday features haunting vocals, beautiful arrangements, and top-shelf production. The minimalist artwork by Lo’s daughter wraps around her mother’s music like a tender embrace, making for a very attractive package of music perfectly suited for a sunny morning.
There’s a major show happening in Hualien, Friday October 31st. It’s not a Halloween event per se, but rather a performance to entertain the troops, organized by Voice of Han Radio, the broadcaster of Taiwan’s national armed forces. Think something along the lines of a U.S.O. tour, featuring performances by folk legends the Lily Sisters, TV song and dance troupe Hei Girls, and Hualien rockers Mister Green & Highway 9.
The show takes place in the big parking lot beside McDonald’s on Jung Jeng Rd. in downtown Hualien. Things get started at 7pm. It’s an outdoor event (weather permitting) and free to the public.
